How laser tattoo removal works

Your body does the heavy lifting

Laser tattoo removal works by breaking ink into much smaller particles, then giving your body time to gradually clear them away.

How laser tattoo removal actually works

Laser tattoo removal works by delivering very short, high-energy pulses of light into the ink in your skin. Those pulses are absorbed by the tattoo pigment rather than the surrounding tissue, which causes the ink particles to break into much smaller fragments. Your body then does the rest. Over the following weeks, your immune system gradually clears those fragmented particles away, which is why fading happens bit by bit after each session rather than all at once.

That is also why tattoo removal is a process, not a one-off treatment. The laser does the shattering, but your body does the clearing. Once the ink has been broken down, your lymphatic system slowly carries those tiny particles away over time, which is why sessions need to be spaced out properly to give your skin time to heal and your body time to respond.

How our AW3 Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser does it

At Tenko, we use an AW3 Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser, a professional system designed to target tattoo pigment with short, powerful bursts of energy. The reason this type of laser is so widely used for tattoo removal is that it is built to deliver energy quickly enough to disrupt the ink while keeping the treatment precise and controlled.

Our machine uses two key wavelengths, because different ink colours respond better to different types of light.

Wavelength
1064nm

For darker pigment

Mainly used for black, dark blue, and deeper pigment. It penetrates further into the skin and is commonly used for darker tattoo ink.

Wavelength
532nm

For warmer tones

Used for red, orange, and some warmer tones. It works more superficially and helps target colours that do not respond in the same way as black ink.

Because tattoos are rarely made up of just one depth or one pigment type, removal often needs a planned approach over a series of sessions. Some areas may break down quickly, while others can take more time depending on the ink, the depth, the age of the tattoo, and how your body clears it.

Why it fades gradually

A lot of people expect the laser to simply erase the tattoo on the day, but that is not how it works. The treatment creates the change inside the pigment, then your body starts processing it afterwards. The real progress happens between sessions, not just during them.

What happens straight after a session

Immediately after treatment, it is very common to see a temporary white response on the skin, often called frosting. This is normal and shows that the laser energy has interacted with the pigment. The area can also look red, swollen, or slightly raised afterwards, and that early reaction usually settles before the longer fading process begins.

As the skin heals, the area may feel similar to a mild burn or sunburn for a short period. Depending on the tattoo and your skin, some people also experience light scabbing or blistering as part of the normal healing response. This is one of the reasons proper aftercare and spacing between sessions matter so much.

What laser can and cannot do

Laser tattoo removal is designed to fade and remove unwanted pigment as safely as possible, but no ethical clinic should promise that every tattoo disappears in exactly the same way. Some tattoos clear extremely well. Others fade enough for a cover-up. Some colours and heavily packed professional work can take longer and may leave a trace depending on the original tattoo and how the skin responds.

That is why consultation matters. We assess the tattoo, explain what the machine can realistically achieve, and build a treatment plan around your skin, your ink, and whether your goal is full removal or enough fading for a cleaner cover-up.
